The Fulldome Research Group is part of Information Experience Design at RCA. FDRG investigates the creative, artistic and communicative possibilities of immersive fulldome projection spaces through practice-based research.
FDRG produces content for immersive fulldome environments which explores the relationship between sound, space, image and embodied experience. Our practice traverses the divide between art and science through creative communication of complex scientific concepts within immersive media spaces. FDRG seeks to expand the understanding, knowledge & language of immersive projection environments through creative practice and critical contextual inquiry.
FDRG is a collaboration between artists, designers and astronomers. It draws upon a broad cross-section of creative practices including fine art, film and immersive media, projection design, animation, graphic design, architecture, sound design and astronomy and astrophysics. Our research outcomes are disseminated through screenings, presentations, conferences and publications.
FDRG evolved out of the Exploded Screen project in the School of Communication at the Royal College of Art, London. Our research is undertaken in partnership with the Peter Harrison Planetarium at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich.
