FDRG at Jena Fulldome Festival 2018

For the fourth consecutive year, FDRG has premiered a selection of new short fulldome films at Europe’s most renowned FullDome Festival in Jena, Germany. Learning to Fly by Kumi Oda and Petra Sohnius, Apparition by Olivia Sullivan and Black Pond by Tongzhou Yu were included in the Student Film Competition screenings in May 2018.

Learning to Fly features an evocative voice-driven soundtrack by Kumi Oda, which is imbued with a quiet sense of yearning. This accompanies cyclic animations by Petra Sohnius. The film ponders how long it takes to consider ourselves grown-up and responsible? Learning to Fly is about unfolding our wings and following our passions.

Olivia Sullivan’s Apparition incorporates 16mm scratch film and uses an emergent rhythmic texture to explore the potential of visual deception, illusion and the permeable perception of reality. The film features a sound mix by RCA Sound Technician, Mike Wyeld.

Black Pond by RCA Digital Direction student Tongzhou Yu considers the impact of contemporary screen-based image-thinking. The Black Pond is a screen, in which images of indemonstrable memories sink into darkness, causing instability when incorrect decoding of memories and images causes a sense of the loss of existence.
